First online demonstration in history apparently a big success

On April 8th 2020 at 7:00 PM, about 430,000 people in Spain joined the first online demonstration ever to demand the resignation of the current Spanish government. The Prime Minister, the Socialist Pedro Sánchez and his coalition partner, the Communist Pablo Iglesias, are blamed for their disastrous handling of the crisis caused by the coronavirus, which will soon will have claimed at least 15, 000 lives in the country.

Just through a live digital platform on the YouTube channel “Gobierno Dimisión” (“Government resignation”) and their web page, with very little resources the organizers managed to get hundreds of thousands connected simultaneously to the broadcasting, but probably gaining a lot more listeners. The main content were the planned legal cases against the government and its most obvious propaganda lies. A minute of silence was kept for all the victims of COVID-19 in Spain.

The Spanish mass media, especially the private television stations that on the 30th of March had received 15 million euros from the central government for lost advertising revenue, mostly ignored the announcement. Like in medieval times, he who pays the tune, calls the piper!

Soon after the historic event was over, official sources reminded the public that the enemy is actually the virus and warned against fighting the wrong battle. This lachrymose rhetoric is typical for those who suddenly discovered their heart for Spain, demanding loyalty and appealing for national unity.

It’s pathetic that those politicians who usually defend positions which clearly contribute to the growing division of Spanish society, bringing back memories of the infamous Popular Front before the outbreak of the Civil War from 1936 to 1939, now make these appeals without blushing.

  1. It’s worse than you say – the government is trying to silence dissenting voices and close the media that they don’t control. They know they are guilty and there is no turning back because they don’t want to face the legal suits that are already mounting. This is getting really bad

  2. Impressive analysis of the current situation in Spain. The ability of these incompetent government to twist the reality in favour of their ideological interest is unlimited. The Spanish society has to wake up before it’s too late. A second Venezuela isn’t that far away.

    • Critics of the current Spanish government often point at Venezuela, but I think that the first step for Spain would be to become more like Argentina. That´s not a very encouraging perspective either.
